A short history of the Gran Hotel
The Gran Hotel Costa Rica was built as part of the Costa Rica enacted law number 34. Back in 1928, Costa Rica was completely void of first-class accommodations; so, in order to create a market for tourism, a law was passed outlining a contract between the first owner of the Gran Hotel, Dr. Luis Paulino Jimenez Ortiz, and Cleto Gonzalez Viquez, President of the Republic of Costa Rica. The agreement was completed in 1930 with the opening of the Gran Hotel, a majestic five story building located in front of the Cultural Square, directly behind the statue of Juan Mora Fernandez, the first President of Costa Rica. The Gran Hotel was declared a historical/architectural landmark in 2004. It is the only hotel in the country to be awarded this honor.
