A little history

The first known river running of the Pacuare was done by Michael Cane in 1975. In 1978 Cane started Costa Rica Expeditions to run commercial trips on the river. Between 1980 and 1983 Rafael Gallo, a previous employee of Cane at Costa Rica Expeditions, gathered four rafts and started the company Rios Tropicales. Aventuras Naturales joined the list of commercial rafting companies on the Pacuare River in the mid 1980s. 1986 saw Tico's River Adventures started in Turrialba, the closest city to the Pacuare River. In 1998 the nearby Reventazon River was dammed pushing more people to all the local rafting companies to shift focus to primarily the Pacuare River.

An unforgettable journey

The trip down this wild and scenic river offers some of the finest white water rafting in Latin America and takes you past luxuriant rainforest, crystalline waterfalls and dense vegetation covering the sides of steep gorges. It is also an environmentally sustainable adventure that is carbon neutral and supports efforts to conserve the rivers ecosystems and help nearby communities. When you travel with your San Jose Costa Rica rent a car to a Pacuare River Tour you can be rest assured that you are not damaging the environment.

An overnight adventure

It is not difficult to paddle the entire lower Pacuare in a day with your San Jose Costa Rica rent a car, but overnight trips are much more relaxed. With a two day trip it is possible to hike up two or three side canyons. If you decide to tray a three day trip you have more time to explore the jungle by way of the numerous trails that have been used by the local Indians and Campesinos for years. The low beaches are not good places to camp because the river often rises dramatically at night. Most of the prime camping spots above the inner gorge are privately owned. There is a privately owned campground that caters to private groups at the cable crossing approximately 3 miles below Tres Equis.

A lasting memory

One of the most memorable aspects of the Pacuare trip is always been the put-in. For several years, one outfitter used the original river access plan, where local camps, shuttle rafts, kayaks, equipment, and food down a dirt path on an oxcart. The road to the river was wiped out by a flood, so the oxcart method of transport had been abandoned. Although the old road/trail through San Mart has recently been upgraded and improved, most trips now begin at a drive in access point two miles downstream. From the put-in to the beginning of the inner gorge, the river drops through several Class II ?III boulder gardens and simple drops towards the rain forest. Among the more interesting residents of the lowland forest are ocelots and jaguars. If you're lucky you just might be able to spot them when you travel with your San Jose Costa Rica rent a car.
